From their site: "BMI is the bridge between songwriters and the businesses and organizations that want to play their music publicly. As a global leader in music rights management, BMI serves as an advocate for the value of music, representing more than 8.5 million musical works created and owned by more than 650,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers."
I and other establishments that have live music are monitored for compliance. Non-compliance can result in large fines and/or a lawsuit. What is non-compliance? Playing songs that are not covered under the BMI music rights management.
You, as a musician playing at 612 Vineyard, need to agree to play only approved songs. I will do the work for you and verify which songs are copyrighted through BMI. You need to supply a set list when you are booked and agree to only play those songs when you are here doing your gig. You CANNOT take requests and play a song.
